Project Caradhras

Like most good challenges, I came out of this one with a lot more learned than when I started.
I got interested in photogrammetry many years ago, but I didn´t quite experiment with it until a couple of years back. I enjoyed the process a lot on my spare time, and I figured out what worked and not, but at the end, I had no target to achieve with it.
But then I realized that I could do a little homage to the LOTR with the figures I had at my home. So I chose to combine two things I liked, and this was the final result for it.
Personally, I enjoyed the world building the most. Caradhas pass is a small sequence in the LOTR movies, but it is a pivotal point of the Fellowships voyage.
The photogrammetry process was the easy part at this point. Introducing the figures on an Unreal environment and making it work overall, that was a bit more of an unknown. I built it with the Quixel library, and I believe that matching the films mountains shape was pretty doable. It was and I´m very happy with the result.
Add the amazing EasySnow plugin, and creating the vibe for the Caradhras was surprisingly straight forward. Thanks to William Faucher for creating such a rad plugin!
I hope you can excuse my camerawork, it is an art form that Im still improving on, but again, surprisingly straight forward to work in Unreal. I do wish the render settings tab was a bit more polished and easy going on the users, but at the same time, those render times are hard to beat.

I hope you all like the end result!

One of the issues with photogrammetry is that the resulting meh is incredibly dense. However, using Zbrush we can decimate the mesh preserving the UVs that were generated. That way I could reduce 1.5 gigs to 300 megas, which was much more manageable.

The world building could have been daunting, but remenber that as long as you have what you need for your cameras, you are good to go. Optimizing for the project is somethign that is both smart and neccesary. Or you can build a full mountain. Up to taste!
